The Shape of Light must match the shape of the intended target, in order to achieve; true efficiency, minimal intrusion, reduced glare, improved uniformity and optimal illumination.

The industry’s goal should not be soley Efficiency (lumens-per-watt) but rather Efficiency + C.U. (Co-efficient of Utilization). C.U is the measure (%) of the light generated that actually arrives at the target. To consider only lumens-per-watt is to count the light which literally goes out the window or illuminates our night sky as efficient use of light.

Clearly the lighting industry is at an interesting place in history. On December 19^th, President George Bush Signed H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 into Law, mandating the phase out of incandescent lamps. Efficiency and performance are taking center stage over price, creating a strong market opportunity for those companies whom move fastest with real solutions. The market is anticipating the LED to emerge as the winner. High cost, poor color and significant thermal requirements, limit the LED (on its own) as a viable near term replacement for the incandescent.
